Dr. Sara J. Mearns

Dr. Sara J. Mearns is the founder of the clinic.

Dr Mearns grew up in New York and southern Illinois and moved to the Baton Rouge area while in high school. She attended Louisiana State University and majored in Pre-Veterinary Medicine before she went on to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Mearns was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1997.

Dr Mearns own's a German Shepherd whose name is Dean.

Dr. Harrison E. Ball

Specialises in behavioral medicine cases

Dr. Harrison E. Ball is an experienced team member with over 15 years experience in the field.

Dr. Ball attended the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University and received her Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology in 1996. He went on to attend the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. He has received continuing education certifications in ultrasound, ethology, animal psychology and orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Ball has three cats and boasts a plethora of marine species in his backyard pond.

Dr. Glen J. Thomson

Specialises in exotic bird and reptile cases

Dr. Thomson brings 13 years of diverse and well-travelled experience to our team.

A native of Missouri, Dr. Thomson attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and majored in Biology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. He received early acceptance into the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Dr. Thomson went on to complete an internship at Florida Veterinary Specialists from 2003 to 2004. Dr. Thomson said he wanted to be a veterinarian while still in kindergarten. "As long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to work with animals," he says. While still a teenager, he volunteered at the Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center. Dr. Thomson has special training and surgical expertise in the care and treatment of exotic pets, including, but not limited to: ferrets, rabbits, rodents and reptiles.

Dr Thomson is the proud owner of a large bird sanctuary in addition to his pet snake Jacob.

Dr. Alexa C. Maxwell

Specialises in veterinary dentistry and dermatology cases

Dr. Alexa C. Maxwell is the newest member to our team, injecting Her youthfulness into our midst.

After graduating from Tulane University with a BA in Economics in 2007, Dr. Maxwell worked as an assistant at Dr, Mearns's Clinic (where she also worked prior to graduation). She graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 and has been a veterinarian with us since July of 2013. Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia with a blind dog and a deaf cat—in addition to her work at an emergency clinic during her undergraduate career—inspired Dr. Maxwell to become a veterinarian.

Dr. Maxwell currently has no pets and is constantly heard around the clinic announcing, “every animal that comes through this door, I treat as if my own.
